The World's Largest Source Of Financial Web Services

From the CEO's Desk
One of the primary benefits of web services is business agility. A mid-2006 Gartner survey conducted with a sample of companies suggested that Service Oriented Architectures have a positive impact on business agility. Over 50% of the 158 respondents in the survey indicated that SOA had a positive impact on their business agility, 17% of them said the impact was significantly positive.

The reasons for this impact are simple:
  • Since SOAP and WSDL standards are now embedded in every development toolkit known to man, web services completely shield analysts and developers from complex and time-consuming interface development work. You just point to the right WSDL and code away.
  • Web services let developers focus on the true value added components of a new application rather than the legwork of gathering required information or providing commoditized but necessary functionality. Companies like InsideView are able to deliver successful applications quickly using Xignite’s services (See Who’s Hot below).
  • Once deployed, web services can be re-used, unplugged, re-plugged, moved, recycled, expanded, scaled, or distributed with tremendous ease compared to previous-generation solutions. Technology is no longer a hindrance to change, it becomes a powerful enabler.
Gartner predicts that Service Oriented Architectures will be used in more than 50% of new, mission-critical applications and business processes designed in 2007 and in more than 80% by 2010. Needless to say, the increase in speed, agility, and flexibility that web services create for businesses will be one of the primary drivers of that growth. Just as the web helped businesses reach and serve their clients in ways unimaginable, web services will help businesses adapt to their increasingly demanding clients and deliver on their ever changing needs.

InsideView is not Umberto Milletti’s first successful startup. Umberto was also a co-founder of DigitalThink, a leading provider of Web-based corporate training services. Umberto helped lead DigitalThink to a successful IPO, growing annual revenues to $60 million, and ultimately to its sale to Convergys in 2004.

Umberto started InsideView in 2005 to create a different kind of sales intelligence service, designed to keep sales professionals informed about the people and companies they most want to understand - their prospects and customers. InsideView’s unique opportunity intelligence and analysis technology helps salespeople more effectively learn about the business priorities and decision-making structure of prospects. InsideView offers detailed, up-to-date sales intelligence about key managers, strategic initiatives, corporate pain points, and competitors.

To provide this information to its clients, InsideView needed to access and mine a large set of quantitative and qualitative information including press releases and SEC filings. "XigniteEdgar and XigniteReleases made it easy for us to access this information. We were able to focus on our opportunity dashboards based on information mining and aggregation technology for our clients instead of spending time building processes to simply collect the information." says Umberto. “Xignite web services helped us build our solution much quicker and at a much lower cost.”

And InsideView is not stopping here. They recently announced the availability of their solution on the popular SalesForce.com AppExchange platform.

What's new
Services listed below were released in the last twelve months:
  • XigniteCalendar Xignite has partnered with Econoday, the leading provider of economic calendars, to deliver a web service version of their popular economic indicator calendar (take a peak at this one on Bloomberg). This service will be ideal for you to present business critical market announcements directly on your employee portals or on custom wireless applications.
  • XigniteScreener lets you screen more than 10,000 US and Canadian equities based on more than 200 different criteria. See the What’s Hot section to learn more.
As of the last couple weeks, we have received approval from the following exchanges for redistribution of their delayed commodity prices. Check out XigniteFutures for the complete list:
  • New York Board of Trade (NYBOT)
  • Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT)
  • New York Commodities Exchange (COMEX)
Many applications require screening functionality. Whether you are building an analyst workstation or powering an investor web site, screening can really enhance the stickiness or value-add of your solution. Unfortunately, building such functionality has traditionally been complex and expensive.

First, you have to build and maintain a gigantic and expensive database containing all the possible criteria a user may want to use in a screen. Second, you have to design and build a sophisticated querying engine giving your users the flexibility they need.

Using XigniteScreener you can add screening functionality to your application or web site in minutes. The service lets you query and filter our 10,000+ database of US equities by more than 250 different parameters. You can screen equities by any combination of parameters, in addition, XigniteScreener offers some simple operations you can use to screen using one, two or three parameters.

For instance, let’s say that you want to query any equity that had a market capitalization greater than $150B and a PE greater than 50. The operation you would use for that is DoubleSearch. The operation accepts 2 similar sets of criteria (therefore its name).

To search for Market Capitalizations greater than $150B we enter the following values:
  • Type1 = MarketCapitalization
  • SearchType1 = GreaterThan
  • FirstValue1 = 150000000000
To search for PE greater than 50:
  • Type2 = PERatio
  • SearchType2 = GreaterThan
  • FirstValue2 = 50
Finally we enter Count = 100 to make sure we only retrieve the top 100 values. This precaution proves moot as the search only returns a single Company: Google, with a PE of 64 and a market cap of $152,708,086,442.00.
Developer Corner
Using XSL to parse and format the result of a web service is easy. The first step is to use HTTP call to one of our web services and pull the result in an XML document. The next step is to apply an XSL stylesheet directly to the result of that call. Applying a stylesheet is simple. The only thing you must worry about is manipulating the document using the proper namespace.

For instance, the following code will apply a stylesheet directly to a document as it is loaded in a .Net XML WebControl for display in a web page.

First, create an xml document instance and load it with the result of the web service:

Dim objDocument as New System.Xml.XmlDocument()
objDocument.Load
("http://www.xignite.com/xquotes.asmx/
GetMarketSummary")
Then create and load the stylesheet:

Dim objStylesheet As

New System.Xml.Xsl.XslTransform()
objStylesheet.Load(
"http://www.xignite.com/Samples/example.xslt")
Finally create a .Net XML webcontrol and apply the document and stylesheet to it:

Dim objXMLControl As New System.Web.UI.WebControls.Xml()
objXMLControl.Document = objDocument
objXMLControl.Transform = objStylesheet
Using the following web service output: http://www.xignite.com/xquotes.asmx/GetMarketSummary
And applying the following stylesheet:
http://www.xignite.com/Samples/example.xslt

We obtain the following web page:
http://www.xignite.com/Samples/xXsl.aspx?xml=
http://www.xignite.com/
xquotes.asmx/GetMarketSummary&xsl=
http://www.xignite.com/Samples/Example.xslt
